The inspiration hit me just now, this morning, and so I’ve decided that every now and then I’ll share reasons that we should all care about connection.
Connection – in any realm, in any context, will be covered.
So here goes.
#1 We should care about connection because it makes us the best humans we can be. Connection is joy. It’s love.
Do you have to love someone to feel connected to them? Absolutely not. We’ve all had the experience of feeling a ‘click’ with someone we’ve just met.
You may never see the person again. But it feels good. It’s a very special and joyful feeling, and most of you might say, it’s rare.
I say it’s not. Or rather, it doesn’t have to be.
What I’ve found, in fact, is that you can experience that click with just about anyone, if you take the time to get beyond small talk and ask deeper questions. You’ll find your commonalities and shared humanity, and your heart will register it.
But you know what? Sometimes, you don’t even need that a deep conversation, either.
You can create the sensation of a connection with someone in the brief few moments that you make eye contact with and talk to them, in a not-just-going-through-the-motions sort of way.
I know, because I used to be a doubter. I was proven wrong when I started randomly approaching strangers and having deep conversations with them, and when I started paying attention to my routine daily interactions.
Ultimately, we are meant for connection. It brings out the best in us. Our souls, our hearts, our wellness thrive on connection. It’s what makes us most human, and hence, the best human is one who cherishes connection.
So try it. The next time you are at the store, in an Uber, waiting for coffee or at a reception desk… Forget about the transaction at hand. Look the person in the eye until they look back, and smile. Take a moment and recognize the soul behind those eyes.
It feels good. It’s like a shot of joy and energy, and even like finding a long lost friend sometimes. Perhaps our souls just recognize what is… a piece of ourselves in all of us.
